North Macedonia: promising implementation of the pilot
The Red Cross of North Macedonia is successfully piloting a community-based approach to care for dependent elderly, through the integration of an Emergency Button Service within its home care package.
Since the start of the pilot in September last year, the operational team has already gained significant practical knowledge, which is reflected in the positive feedback provided by the service’s users. Their skills are strengthened through regular training sessions delivered by medical professionals, focusing on appropriate methods to help users with a specific medical condition.
Besides, the training programme for caregivers is progressing as planned. Two sessions have already been held, a third is in progress and a fourth is in preparation. Until now 30 candidates have completed the sessions focusing on theoretical and practical caring skills, which allowed them to receive a certificate formally recognised by the State, and a chance to work for the Home Help Service for elderly people and people with disabilities. The goal is to reach a total of 60 certified caregivers.
Furthermore, a study visit to Austria is planned, providing the opportunity for representatives of the Red Cross of North Macedonia to learn about practices supporting informal carers.
